interpretive panels & monuments
- In 2011, Civil War Study Group Inc. President Pete Rainey led the development of three interpretive panels to memorialize events that took place within Lake of the Woods area during the May 1864 Battle of the Wilderness. The detailed markers include timelines, maps, graphics, and units that were involved. The panels were installed in November, 2011.
- On May 5, 2014, CWSG unveiled and dedicated a Monument to the Fallen to those who fell, on both sides of the conflict, within the boundaries of modern-day Lake of the Woods, Virginia.
- In December 2015, CWSG had installed stone posts with brass markers at the location of two historic cemeteries located within Lake of the Woods.
- In July 2016, CWSGI delivered to and LOWA installed two new interpretive panels, which were erected by LOWA personnel in August 2016: Spotswood Cemetery; and, Apperson Family and Lake of the Woods
- In October 2017, CWSGI delivered to and LOWA personnel installed a new interpretive panel at the Sussex Mail Substation on Lakeview Parkway. This partners with the panel on Cornwallis Beach to show in more detail the positions of battle lines at the start of Gordon’s Flank Attack.
NOTE: These panels and monuments are situated totally within Lake of the Woods (LOW), a gated community. As such, they can be viewed in person only by LOW members and/or their registered guests!
