Poster Judging:

Members of Civil War Study Group (GWSG) at Lake of the Woods act as judges for the 4th Grade history poster contests at Locust Grove Elementary and Lightfoot Elementary Schools.

Because of pandemic restrictions, this activity did not occur in 2020 & 2021. In 2019, under the leadership of CWSG Board Member Allie Felder, 13 volunteers stepped forward to judge close to 200 posters at the two schools.

On May 14, 2019 in the LOW Clubhouse, CWSG hosted a reception, with cake, cookies and lemonade, for the 34 blue ribbon winners from Locust Grove and the 6 blue ribbon winners from Lightfoot and their families. Volunteers Helen Brewer, Judy Schrage and Jane Owiesny, all from Wilderness ‘Tiques, served refreshments before and after presentation of the awards.

ABT TEACHER INSTITUTE SCHOLARSHIPS:

The American Battlefields Trust annually holds a Teacher Institute during July to help teachers improve their understanding and teaching of topics related to the American Revolutionary War and the Civil War. Usually participation in this free program requires travel and lodging expenses. The Civil War Study Group Teacher Institute scholarship program aims to defer substantially those expenses. CWSG had no need to fund these scholarships in 2020 & 2021 due to pandemic restrictions resulting in the Institute being held virtually.

President Charles Brewer in July 2019 presented Theresa Tempesta, a teacher at Massaponax High School, with a check towards attendance at that year's Institute in Raleigh, NC
